Beginning Basics

So, you're new to skateboarding? Good for you! Skating is a fun, rewarding experience. It's good exercise and can be used as a stress releaser or anything else you can think of. It's also a great way to meet new people. We want to offer you some advice.

If you can't quite push down the street yet, that's ok! You've just started. All people start somewhere, right? First thing's first. Decide which way you will ride--regular or goofy. Regular means that your left foot is on the nose of the board; goofy means that your right foot is on the nose of the board. Don't let anyone tell you which way to ride, it's personal preference. Find out which way you ride by feeling it out. Do you ride more confidently goofy or regular?

So, you've figured out your stance already? Good. The next step is how to push properly. Most people push with their back foot; however, I find that many beginners will push mongo-footed(pushing with one's front foot). If you do push mongo, try to break yourself of the habit. Not only will you be ridiculed by many, pushing mongo just tends to get in the way. It's faster to bring your back foot up onto the board then it is your front.
